SINGLE-MINDED DEVOTION

1/5/2009 10:17 AM

Step Three - We made a decision to turn our will and our life over to the care of God as we understood him.

BIBLE READING: James 4:7-10

We may have already chosen to follow God, letting him define the overall direction of our life. Even so, many of us still try to keep parts of our heart hidden from God. We have devoted these parts of ourself to gratifying our addiction, to doing things that are contrary to the will of God. This sets us up for living a double life, which can fill us with guilt, shame, and instability.

Even those of us who have given our heart to God face new temptations and decisions every day. James was addressing believers when he wrote: "So humble yourselves before God. Resist the Devil, and he will flee from you. Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you".

If we choose to live a double life, we may begin to doubt whether God hears us at all. As James wrote: "A doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. People like that should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. They can't make up their minds. They waver back and forth in everything they do".

When we resist the Devil at every turn and draw close to God, he will draw close to us. When we open the hidden portions of our heart and begin to make choices in favor of recovery, we will soon grow confident that God desires to help us.

My friends, let's not continue to live with guilt, shame and instability. Let's learn to turn our will over each day to our heavenly Father who can restore us!! and give us peace, joy and happiness. Love you all!

The word "Him" in step 3 is capitalized because it refers to the God of out understanding .

Who the hell is james? I don't see his name mentioned in the Big Book at all! I'm grateful that I don't have to or choose not confuse religion with spirituality....I've never seen in the rooms of AA where the bible is keeping people sober . Do you have any experience with the first 164 pages of the Big Book that non-religious people might be able to identify with??

HEY ALIVE!!! I THINK YOU NEED TO STAY OUT OF MY BUSINESS WITH MY GOD, WHO BY THE WAY CREATED ALL OF US AND THE EARTH MANY DECADES BEFORE THE AA BIG BOOK WAS WRITTEN! IT SADDENS ME TO KNOW THERE ARE MANY, MANY PEOPLE THAT DON'T HAVE JESUS IN THEIR LIVES. I CAN ONLY CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR THOSE AND THEIR SALVATION!

Myangel, this is one of the reason's I have left the tables of AA, and chose instead to go the way of Celebrate Recovery. In my opinion, there's only so much spirituality to be harvested from the Big Book and the tables before the logical progression of rigorously working the program left me hungry for more spirituality....but in order for that to occur, doing away with resentments towards 'religion' must be a choice and also, being open-minded helps. Now, I just choose not to deal with the resentments that close-minded people in the program have towards those who know Jesus as their brother and God.

Alive, all I have to say is that your type is so worried about chasing off the newcomer with the 'J' word or the Bible. Why don't your types worry about chasing off Christians or Bible believers if you persecute them because they want to share their experience of strength and hope? A counterpoint to your "Who the hell is James?" question is "Where the heck is Bill's name in the Bible?" The truth is, it's everywhere in the Bible. So is yours. So is mine and so is myangel's. Every human beings story is in that Bigger Book.

By the way my friend, those 12 Steps you're working there, those ideas are all from that Bigger Book.

Tolerance - preach it or practice it....

Myangel, please don't quit posting these. They help me and are reminiscent of Celebrate Recovery.

Peace and Love be with you,
Tim_S

I do not always comment on your blogs, but I have been reading them lately. Today I must comment. Please don't stop posting and using the BIBLE, which someone in a meeting recently said is our Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. It also says in the Big Book, on page 68, 3rd paragraph. We never apologize to anyone for depending on our Creator. And it goes on, I am not going to type the whole paragraph out here, but it is good. Thank you for your references. :) they are helping me.......Jennifer

My Story
I WAS SIXTEEN WHEN I HAD MY FIRST DRINK WHICH WAS A BOTTLE OF WINE AND PASSING OUT. I ALWAYS WANTED TO FEEL A PART OF WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. WHEN I WAS 21 I EXPERIENCED COCAINE FOR THE FIST TIME AND WAS ADDICTED FOR FIVE YEARS. I REMEMBER USING ALL NIGHT AND PREGNANT WITH MY SECOND DAUGHTER WHO IS NOW 23.I MOVED IN WITH MY EX-HUSBAND AND SOBERED UP. WE WERE MARRIED FOR SEVENTEEN YEARS AND THE LAST SIX YEARS I WAS MISERABLE! I STARTED DRINKING ALOT AND FELT AT THE TIME I FOUND A SOLUTION TO ALL MY PROBLEMS AND BLAMED EVERYONE ELSE. I STARTED TO HIDE MY BOTTLES AND WOULD SNEEK TO THE BARS UNTIL ONE DAY MY DOCTOR TOLD ME THAT IF I CONTINUE TO DRINK I WILL DIE BECAUSE I HAVE A LIVER DISEASE, SO THAT SCARED ME ENOUGH TO ADMIT MYSELF TO ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS. I HAVE BEEN SOBER NOW SINCE JULY 6, 2002 AND BY THE GRACE OF GOD AND AA I DON'T HAVE TO PICK UP THAT DRINK ANYMORE. I HAVE A SOLUTION TODAY AND THAT'S AA. I HAVE TOOLS THAT I USE EVERYDAY!! AND BECAUSE OF AA AND GOD, I AM ABLE TO STAY SOBER ONE DAY AT A TIME. I MET MY SECOND HUSBAND FOUR YEARS AGO, AND HE IS ONE OF A KIND!! I PRAISE GOD FOR BRINGING HIM INTO MY LIFE, HE NOT ONLY IS A GREAT HUSBAND BUT A WONDERFUL DADDY TO OUR PRECIOUS LITTLE ANGEL, CAILYN WHO IS FOUR. SHE HAD BROUGHT SO MUCH JOY INTO MY LIFE AND GOD HAS GIVEN ANOTHER CHANCE TO BE THE MOTHER I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE. I PRAISE GOD AND THANK AA FOR THE LIFE I LIVE TODAY. THANK YOU AA FOR SIX GREAT YEARS OF SOBRIETY!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL
